About the museum
Gut z'Bach between Niederau and Oberau has demonstrably existed since the 13th century and initially belonged to the lords of Kundl. It was first mentioned in writing around 1360; the present farmstead with farmhouse, mill and house chapel dates from 1795.
In 1993 the municipality of Wildschönau bought the farm, and in 1995 the association "Wildschönauer Bergbauernmuseum" was founded. The chapel and the roof of the farmhouse were restored, in 1997 the Hans Mayr collection moved into the building from the former fire station in Oberau, and in July 1997 the museum opened with more than 1,150 exhibits from the everyday life of earlier generations. In 1999 accessible sanitary facilities were built, and in 2000 the threshing floor and cowshed were converted into an event space with a glass enclosure.
Today over 1,200 exhibits in the historic rooms tell of the meagre life of Tyrolean mountain farmers: from the hallway, kitchen and smoke kitchen (Rauchkuchl) via flax and hemp, tools and farming to religion and superstition, the Schützen tradition, and music and games. Separate rooms commemorate the Wildschönau moon researcher Hanns Hörbiger and Minister Thaler, who emigrated to Brazil.
Since 2002 a crafts market has been held in the museum on Thursdays in summer, where craftspeople demonstrate their techniques; farmhouse bread is baked in the old bread oven. The museum is run by the Bergbauernmuseum z'Bach association.
