About the museum

The U.S. Sheriff's Museum Austria is a private, volunteer-run museum that has offered insights into the world of American policing since 2015. Behind the house are personal experiences and numerous trips the operators have made to the USA, from which many pieces of the collection come. In 2017, a support association was founded to accompany the museum and organize events.

The holdings include more than 16,000 sheriff badges, which by its own account makes the collection one of the largest outside the USA, plus more than 1,000 further exhibits such as original uniforms and equipment. The range extends from the Wild West to the present day.

Since September 1, 2025, the museum has been located at a new, more accessible site on Marktgasse in the village center of Hopfgarten im Brixental. Because the operators run the house alongside their main jobs, it is not open every day; visits outside the regular times are possible on request. In addition to guided tours for groups and school classes, lectures, discussion evenings and meetings are occasionally held at the museum.
