About the museum
The Widumspfiste in Fügen is one of the oldest buildings in the village and has been documented since the High Middle Ages. It served as a storehouse and provisions store in the church precinct, but later also as a horse stable, accommodation for farmhands, a prison and even as the dean's apiary. In the early 1970s the municipality of Fügen acquired the house and handed it over to the local heritage association, which undertook its conversion and renovation.
In 1981 the local history museum opened with an already existing collection. In 2005 the sponsoring association extended its name to "Heimat- und Museumsverein", and in 2011 the house received its present name "Museum in der Widumspfiste". The building is owned by the municipality of Fügen and is developed and run on a voluntary basis by the association.
One focus is on the Zillertal singing families and the worldwide spread of the song "Silent Night", which is linked to the organ builder Carl Mauracher. The museum also shows Zillertal parlours, crafts such as quill embroidery, rope-making and cooperage, archaeology, sacred art, clubs and traditional associations, a Mozart organ from Hall, a room on the Tux-Zillertal cattle breed and, in the basement created in 2004, the history of mining in Fügen and Fügenberg.
