About the museum
The area around Stadtschlaining has been mining country for centuries: as early as the 15th century, in the time of the town's founder Andreas Baumkircher, various ores were extracted here. According to the municipality, antimony was first documented from 1744 and was mined for more than two centuries; mining on a larger scale began in the middle of the 19th century. At its peak, around 160 people worked in the Goberling antimony mine, until it was shut down in 1990 for economic reasons.
The museum preserves the memory of this era. The last surviving tools and keepsakes found a new home in Goberling's old cold storage building, the former ice house. Former miners rebuilt a show tunnel that conveys the confinement and hardship of working underground.
On display are original mine lamps, the miners' most important tools such as mallet, iron, heart-shaped shovel and bolt fork, as well as tunnel plans and information boards on the history of antimony mining.
