About the museum
The beginnings go back to 1960, when an endangered building from Oberwart was saved. It took a few years for this to become a museum village: from 1967 an ensemble developed at the present site in the spa town of Bad Tatzmannsdorf, beginning with the carefully relocated Oberwarter Kitting. Later, buildings from Deutsch Schützen, Zuberbach, Rauchwart and other places were added. In 1972 the open-air museum was officially opened.
The collection comprises about twenty farm buildings from the late 18th to the early 20th century, representing the traditional timber construction of South Burgenland. These include thatched dwellings, storage buildings such as the clay-plastered Kitting and the Tschardake, as well as a cross barn, kiln, pigsty, dovecote, smithy, wheel well and bell tower. The houses are furnished with tools, crockery and textiles and convey the everyday life of the farming population known in dialect as the "Heanzen".
The museum is run by Kurbad Tatzmannsdorf GmbH, which also operates the thermal hotels of the REDUCE Gesundheitsresort. The grounds include an arcaded Heuriger (wine tavern) serving regional cuisine; festivals and events also take place here.
