About the museum
The museum's foundation was laid by the art teacher Franz Simon (1909–1997), who from the 1960s surveyed, drew and collected rural buildings and tools in southern Burgenland. In summer 1970, he rented the north wing of a farmhouse built around 1800 in Oberschützen and set up his "Heimathaus" there, which opened in October 1970.
Since 2003, the ensemble of the old farmhouse and a modern extension has formed the Haus der Volkskultur. It houses three institutions: the Hianzenverein as owner of the building, the Burgenländisches Volksliedwerk and the Museumsverein Oberschützen. The museum itself opened on 5 October 2003.
The Simon collection shows rural everyday life of the 19th and early 20th centuries in rooms such as the parlour, kitchen, flax processing, dairy farming and bread baking, as well as in a school museum. A second exhibition section commemorates the Protestant pastor Gottlieb August Wimmer (1791–1863), who shaped Oberschützen through reforms and the founding of the Protestant school institutions.
In 2015, the museum received the quality seal of the Österreichischer Museumsbund, which was renewed in 2025 for 2025 to 2030.
