About the museum
The first plans date back to 1937, when a museum committee under District Head Viktor Kainzmayer wanted to build up a “Local History Collection Landstraße”. Its foundation was around 200 watercolours by Adolf Albin Blamauer with motifs from the district. After 1938 the association was dissolved, and the objects were packed into crates and placed in a depot of the municipal museum.
The idea was taken up again in 1949: the head teacher Hans Pemmer founded a support association, and on 19 June 1949 the Landstraße local history museum opened in a school on Rochusgasse. On 1 December 1956 it moved into its present location at Sechskrügelgasse 11, organised by the old suburbs of Landstraße, Weißgerber and Erdberg.
Besides the district's history, two memorial rooms form the focus. Since 1995 one room has documented the names and fates of the district's Jewish residents, more than half of whom were murdered during the Nazi era. Another room is dedicated to the operetta composer Bruno Granichstaedten, whose Bösendorfer baby grand piano was restored in 2023. The office is dedicated to the painter Josef Engelhart and furnished with furniture of Josef Weinheber. An extensive collection of photographs and postcards can be consulted.
