About the museum

Even before 1900, many people from the Bohemian Forest came to Vienna and joined together in regional groups. After the Second World War and the expulsion of the German-speaking population, this community grew considerably. In 1952 the writers Herbert von Marouschek and Karl Haudek founded the association "Erstes Österreichisches Böhmerwaldmuseum"; the collection was at first housed in various Viennese inns.

In 1955 the holdings were placed under heritage protection, and in 1960 the Erzgebirger Heimatstube joined. Since 1967 the museum has used rooms at Ungargasse 3 in the 3rd district.

On a small floor area, the museum shows costumes and textiles, household goods, glass and tableware, paintings, maps, prayer books as well as song texts and sheet music from the formerly German-speaking areas of the Bohemian Forest and the Ore Mountains. These include a fully catalogued library, local chronicles and a digitised collection of more than 10,000 historical photographs and postcards.

Run by volunteers, the museum offers advice on family and local history research and cooperates in cross-border exhibition and digitisation projects with museums and municipalities in the Czech Republic, for example with institutions in Český Krumlov.
