About the museum

It all began with the Liesing local historian and court president Anton Matzig, who in 1938 put together a first small show in the ceremonial hall of the district office on Perchtoldsdorfer Straße. His son-in-law, the senior teacher Josef Ehn, expanded the collection further with a particular interest in prehistory. The Museumsverein Liesing was founded on 8 December 1953; in the mid-1950s the museum was given two rooms in the district office.

Under the directors Martin Topic and Josef Roskosny, a stock of finds grew, ranging from the Neolithic through the Roman period to the Avars. From 1983, museum director Peter Schmidt, with the support of the district administration, was able to move into the vacant, listed former boys' elementary school of 1884 on Canavesegasse in Atzgersdorf; the first exhibition there in 1985 was devoted to the 100th anniversary of the Badner Bahn.

After renovation from 1996, the building reopened in 1998 under Maximilian Stony. Today around 680 m² on the first and second floors are available for exhibitions and events. On show are the district's eight historic localities, trades and industry, the Liesing brewery, railways and public transport, folklore such as dolls, toys and an old Viennese kitchen, and artists with a Liesing connection such as Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Lectures, readings and concerts take place in the ceremonial hall; the museum is run by Heide Liebhart.
