About the museum
The SchokoMuseum belongs to the Confiserie Heindl, a Viennese family business with more than 70 years of history, and has been located since 2001 directly at the production site on Willendorfer Gasse in the 23rd district. It sees itself as Vienna’s first chocolate museum and is deliberately located close to production: on the upper floor, visitors can look into the production of the confiserie and of the wafer specialist Pischinger, the oldest confectionery brand in Austria.
The museum tour tells the story of cocoa and chocolate over three millennia, from the Olmecs to the modern praline. It explains how the cocoa bean becomes chocolate, from cultivation and fermentation through roasting and grinding to conching, and lets guests taste along the way. According to the museum, only cocoa from certified Fairtrade cultivation is used.
The experience includes freshly made tastings, several chocolate fountains with warm, liquid chocolate and the SchokoKino (chocolate cinema). There are also guided tours, an audio guide as an app, as well as praline workshops for adults and children and children’s birthday parties with their own programmes.
