About the museum
The listed house on Wiener Straße dates from the mid-16th century; its portal, the arcaded walkway in the courtyard and a stucco ceiling from the early 18th century characterise the building. Johannes Brahms lived here in the summers of 1884 and 1885. In Mürzzuschlag he composed, among other works, his Fourth Symphony in E minor, Op. 98, as well as more than 30 songs and choral pieces.
Today the Austrian Johannes Brahms Society runs a museum in the house. The exhibition leads visitors like a musical walk through all the summers in which Brahms composed and shows original exhibits, including the Streicher grand piano on which the composer played. The collection also includes further historic concert grand pianos from the 19th century, which are played at concerts.
The museum hosts concerts and the annual International Brahms Festival. A Brahms trail opened in 1991 leads through Mürzzuschlag over about five kilometres with 17 stations.
