About the museum

In May 1877, Peter Rosegger used the proceeds of his first books to buy a field in Krieglach and, in the same year, had a country house built from his own sketch. He planted around 60 saplings around the property; today only one linden tree he planted still gives shade. He lived here with his family during the summer months from May to October, wrote for the "Heimgarten" and works such as "Jakob der Letzte", and received guests such as Ludwig Anzengruber and Franz Defregger.

Rosegger died in Krieglach on 26 June 1918. His widow Anna had the study and death room locked to preserve them unchanged. In 1943 the Province of Styria acquired the house on the occasion of the poet's 100th birthday and opened it as a memorial in 1948. The wooden "Almhaus" in the garden, which Rosegger had built as a retreat in 1896, also passed to the province in 1963; from 1968 to 2013 the Roseggerbund ran a local history museum in it. Today the "Studierhäusl" is used for changing special exhibitions.

The museum belongs to the Universalmuseum Joanneum. The permanent exhibition uses everyday objects, letters and documents to tell anecdotes and details from Rosegger's life and work; the study and death room on the first floor are preserved in their original state.
