About the museum
Around 1890, Mürzzuschlag became a centre of skiing in Central Europe. Max Kleinoscheg from Graz and the innkeeper Toni Schruf made skiing known and recognised its value for tourism early on. In 1892, together with Walter Wenderich, they climbed the Stuhleck as the first Alpine summit on skis; in 1893 a ski association was founded and the first international ski race in Central Europe took place in Mürzzuschlag, followed in 1894 by a winter sports exhibition.
On 20 November 1947, the municipal council decided to establish a winter sports museum. At first only cellar rooms in the town hall were available; in 1966 the collection moved to the former forestry building at Wiener Straße 79, later to the present building at Wiener Straße 13.
The collection is among the most important in its field: hundreds of skis, from the means of transport of earlier centuries to winning skis of World Cup stars, plus bindings, boots, clothing, sledges, bobsleighs, toboggans, ice sports equipment, mountaineering, posters, an archive and a specialist library. Around 30 augmented reality stations complement the display, and a separate section is devoted to the town history of Mürzzuschlag.
