About the museum

The museum is housed in keeper's house no. 167, which stands directly next to the “Kalte Rinne” viaduct of the Semmering Railway and is slightly older than the railway itself. Ghega, the builder of the Semmering Railway, visited the difficult construction site of the viaduct almost daily, taking the forest path that today serves as the access route to the keeper's house.

According to the sponsoring association, there was no museum for Carl Ritter von Ghega either in Austria or abroad, so it was decided to honour the engineer and his colleagues at precisely this place. Since 7 May 2011, the rerouted railway hiking trail has led directly past the house. The building had to be completely renovated from cellar to roof; the members of the association “Club der Freunde Ghegas” worked on it every spare minute.

The museum commemorates the life and work of Ghega, who was born in Venice in 1802 and planned the Semmering Railway as the world's first mountain railway. Visitors can obtain stamps for hiking books and postcards; a souvenir shop and literature on the railway round out the offering.
