About the museum

The museum was founded on 24 June 1990 by the Viennese state teacher Helmuth Furch, who headed the local museum and cultural association. This gave the residents of Kaisersteinbruch, who had been forcibly resettled in 1939, an intellectual and material centre for their local history. The building on the Kirchenplatz came about as a private initiative of the association.

Its collection documents the craft of the stonemasons and bricklayers who had worked here in the Imperial quarries since the 17th century and received their own guild chest in 1617. On display are stone samples from the quarries and stonemasons' tools, as well as a lapidarium with pieces from buildings such as St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, along with coins from a Roman villa in the area (1st century BC) and a map collection dating from 1590. Another focus is the history of the Stalag XVII A prisoner-of-war camp and the subsequent Soviet occupation.

The museum also sees itself as a research centre and as a documentation and picture archive. On 24 September 2014 it was reopened under the mayor of the municipality of Bruckneudorf and the association's chairwoman Martina Watzek; the newly arranged exhibition takes visitors through 400 years of European cultural history.
