About the museum

The castle stands in the north-eastern corner of Burgplatz in Laa an der Thaya and once secured the town fortifications. Its origins go back to the 13th century; the round Butterfassturm (butter-churn tower) and a lower, square tower are distinctive. A town fire in 1564 destroyed large parts of the town, the defences and also the castle. Around 1786 the building passed into private hands.

The municipality acquired the complex in 2007 and had it restored over the following years. Since 2018 the Butterfassturm and the inner courtyard have been open to the public; in November 2019 the castle hall and the toilet facilities were added, and the hall has been used for events ever since.

In the south wing of the castle, the beer museum shows Laa's brewing tradition. The town was granted brewing rights as early as 1454. On display are historical brewing equipment, a collection of bottles and drinking vessels, and beer advertising from past decades; one focus is the local brewery Hubertus Bräu and its reputation in the European brewing industry.
