About the museum

The museum was founded in 1986 by expellees from South Moravian places such as Höflein, Groß Tajax, Grafendorf, Schönau, Klein Grillowitz and Erdberg. It is based in the Old Town Hall on the Stadtplatz of Laa an der Thaya and is run by the Heimat- und Museumsverein Thayaland.

One part of the exhibition gives an overview of the history of South Moravia: from medieval settlement through the national tensions of the 19th and 20th centuries and the founding of Czechoslovakia to the Munich Agreement, the Second World War and the expulsion of the German-speaking population. A display case with eyewitness accounts and a staged scene complement the tour.

The second focus commemorates life in the old homeland: a furnished kitchen, an Ausnahmsstüberl (retirement parlour), Kirtag customs, everyday objects, handicrafts, religious objects and a cobbler's workshop as an example of South Moravian craftsmanship. In addition there is the collection of Alexander Franz Fleischer with maps, postcards, pictures, books and tableware, as well as documentation on the places of origin of the founders. The captions are also available in English and Czech.
