About the museum

The DomQuartier opened in May 2014 and, for the first time in a long while, connects the buildings that formed the centre of power of the Salzburg prince-archbishops for centuries: the Residenz, the cathedral and the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter. Via the cathedral arches and the cathedral’s organ gallery, a continuous circuit was created through the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town of Salzburg. Around €8.5 million was spent on the conversion.

The museum is operated by DomQuartier Salzburg GmbH, in which the Province of Salzburg, the cathedral church fund of the archdiocese and the Archabbey of St. Peter hold stakes. The circuit begins in the 15 state rooms of the Residenz with furnishings from the Renaissance to Neoclassicism and leads via the Residenzgalerie, with European painting from the 16th to the 19th century, to the terrace on the cathedral arches.

It continues via the North Oratory with special exhibitions and the organ gallery with a view into the cathedral to the Cathedral Museum with the cathedral treasury and art from the churches of the archdiocese. The Art and Curiosity Cabinet shows curiosities of nature and art modelled on the 17th century. The circuit ends with the Long Gallery, one of the earliest gallery buildings north of the Alps, and the St. Peter Museum with treasures from over 1,300 years of monastery history.
