Temporarily closed (expected until 2027). The main building in the Neue Residenz has been closed since 29 October 2023 for complete renovation and extension. The opening of Salzburg Museum NEU together with the Belvedere Salzburg is planned for autumn 2027. Until then the Salzburg Museum shows objects from its collections in the series "Salzburg Museum – Gastspiel" at changing locations; the other sites such as the Fortress Museum, Toy Museum, Folklore Museum and Orangerie Salzburg are also open.

About the museum

The museum goes back to an initiative by the official Vinzenz Maria Süß, who from 1834 collected objects on the history of Salzburg. The holdings, at first called the "Städtisches Arsenal", soon became the Städtisches Museum; in 1849 the city officially took over the collection. Because the Dowager Empress Caroline Augusta assumed patronage from 1850, the institution long bore the name Salzburger Museum Carolino Augusteum.

In the Second World War the museum building was severely damaged, but a large part of the collection, which had been evacuated, survived. A new building opened in 1967, and since 1966 the city and the province have run the museum jointly. After decades of searching for a location, it moved into the Neue Residenz on Mozartplatz and opened there in 2007 under the name Salzburg Museum; in 2009 it was named European Museum of the Year.

The collections range from archaeology through art up to 1800 and from 1800, graphic art and photography to applied arts and everyday culture. Today the Salzburg Museum comprises several sites, including the Fortress Museum, the Toy Museum, the Folklore Museum, the Cathedral Excavations Museum, the Orangerie Salzburg and the Celtic Museum Hallein.

Since the end of October 2023 the main building in the Neue Residenz has been closed: the building is undergoing a complete renovation and extension, and in the second inner courtyard underground exhibition spaces are being created for the "Belvedere Salzburg" of the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere. Until the planned opening of Salzburg Museum NEU in autumn 2027, the museum shows objects from its collections in the series "Salzburg Museum – Gastspiel" at partner institutions.
