About the museum

For centuries, Bad Bleiberg lived from the mining of lead and zinc ores; mining ceased in 1993. A water inrush at the Rudolf blind shaft in 1951 paved the way for today's use of thermal water, which has been pumped up through the Rudolf main shaft since 1962. The mining village thus became a spa town.

The museum uses the historic hoisting building of this shaft. It came into being in 2021 with the takeover of objects from the former Mining Museum in Klagenfurt; the renovation of the building and the design of the interiors were carried out in 2022 and 2023 by volunteer members of the Miners' Cultural Association. The museum was officially opened on 24 June 2023.

The focus is on lead mining: on display are the world's only cult wagon made of lead, replicas of the lead figures from the Hallstatt-period burial mounds of Frög near Rosegg, lead pipes, lead type for letterpress printing, mine maps and tools. Other areas show a collection of minerals and ores, a room dedicated to Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners, original furniture from the last office of the Klagenfurt mining authority, the Bleiberg shell marble and 2,500 kilograms of lead ingots. Information boards explain, among other things, the Carinthian lead smelting furnace, mine surveying and the development of mine lighting.
