About the museum

The house in Unterthörl has served as a commercial building for more than 300 years; for about 200 years it housed a Greißlerei, a general store, which remained in operation until 1989. Among other things, it sold fabrics, sewing supplies, coffee, tea and shoe polish. Diana Erat inherited the building and converted it into a museum to keep it from falling into disrepair; an association of around 100 members supports the house and organises the cultural programme.

In the former sales room the museum shows the grocer's shop with shelves, shop fittings, a large paraffin tank as well as advertising signs, tin cans and toys. The vaulted ceiling of the room bears paintings from the time the house was built around 1820, which were painted over with oil paint in the 1950s and have become visible again as the paint has partly flaked off; a restorer is to uncover and secure them.

Another room is dedicated to the Lower Gailtal festive costume. In Diana Erat's in-house tailor's workshop, costume items such as aprons, blouses, shirts, stockings and bodice cloths are newly made, restored and sold. The house also serves as a venue for readings, book presentations and regional cultural events.
