About the museum
The museum opened on May 16, 1998 and is devoted to the life and work of the painters of the Nötsch Circle. This loose circle of friends shaped Austrian art at the beginning of the 20th century with a highly independent style of painting, especially in the interwar period. It includes Sebastian Isepp and Franz Wiegele, who were born in the region, as well as Anton Kolig and Anton Mahringer, who later moved to Nötsch.
The museum is housed in Franz Wiegele's birthplace in the center of Nötsch. It serves as a documentation center for the four artists and aims to show a cross-section of their work. Photographs and autographs also offer insight into the painters' living conditions and their connections to fellow artists, art historians and intellectuals of their time.
The house is run by an association. Besides exhibitions that change every year, the offerings include an archive, a database and publications; there are guided tours on Thursdays and Sundays, and on Thursdays these are followed by a cultural walk in the painters' footsteps.
