About the museum

Ignaz Joseph Pleyel was born in 1757 in the old schoolhouse of Ruppersthal; he later made a career in Paris as a composer, music publisher and piano maker and founded the Salle Pleyel there. Lessons were taught in the building until 1894, after which it served as a residence and fell increasingly into disrepair.

Following the success of a play about Pleyel at the first Pleyel Festival in 1994, the International Ignaz Joseph Pleyel Society (IPG) campaigned to save the house. In 1996 the market municipality of Großweikersdorf donated the building to the society, and with the support of the province and the Lower Austrian building guild it was renovated by 1998. The museum opened on 5 September 1998.

At its centre are playable original instruments from the House of Pleyel: a fortepiano from 1831, a square piano, an upright piano, a harp and a harmonium. There are also scores and marionettes for Pleyel's opera "Die Fee Urgele". The exhibition room doubles as an intimate concert hall.

Since 2016 the nearby Pleyel Cultural Centre has complemented the offering with around 40 concerts a year, matinees, breakfast and wine hikes around Pleyel's birthplace.
