About the museum
The museum is located on the grounds of the former Schwechat locomotive depot. This was the most important base of the Vienna–Pressburg local railway, which from 1914 connected Vienna with present-day Bratislava, running like a tram on direct current near the city and as an early electric mainline railway on alternating current on the intercity section.
After the Austrian Federal Railways no longer used the facility, several associations moved in; in the early 1980s the site was opened to visitors for the first time. The operator is the VEF – Verband der Eisenbahnfreunde (Association of Railway Friends), which runs the museum on a voluntary basis and cooperates with the Technisches Museum Wien, some of whose vehicles are on display here as loans.
In four halls and on the open-air site, visitors can see vehicles of the Pressburg Railway, local transport carriages more than a hundred years old, diesel and steam locomotives, and a collection of 600 mm narrow-gauge vehicles. Special items include the diesel railcar 5041.03 from 1933 and the Schnellbahn railcar 4030.210, for whose restoration the museum received the Austrian Railway Culture Prize in 2022.
On Sundays and public holidays the narrow-gauge railway runs for visitors, and many carriages can also be viewed from the inside.
