About the museum

The impetus for the museum came in 1988 from the 600th anniversary of Laxenburg's market charter. An exhibition in the Grünne-Haus presented the town's history on a larger scale for the first time and brought together many loans from private and public owners. This led to the wish to permanently display some of the pieces, and the same year the Kultur- und Museumsverein Laxenburg was founded to care for local history.

In the following years, the association held several exhibitions a year in the community hall and later in a gallery on Wienerstraße, while searching for a permanent home. It found one in the former fire station with an adjoining agricultural casino at Herzog-Albrecht-Straße 9, which had previously served as a depot for municipal workers. Conversion began in September 1995. The main hall, with columns and a glass roof, follows the floor plan of the old casino, and a surrounding gallery is reserved for the permanent presentation on Laxenburg's history.

The museum opened on June 26, 1998. From 2001 onward, the roof over the low wing was raised and developed into a storeroom. In the remaining rooms, the association presents changing exhibitions three to four times a year; traditions include the annual exhibition “Laxenburg kreativ” in late autumn and the Advent event at the museum.
