About the museum
The roots of the Aviaticum go back to 1983, when world-record glider pilot Toni Kahlbacher and Hofrat DI Reinhard Keimel founded the Austrian Gliding Museum Hundsheim–Spitzerberg. After several location plans failed, the project found a home in Wiener Neustadt – supported by the city, the province of Lower Austria, the aircraft manufacturer Diamond Aircraft and a private foundation.
The museum opened on June 3, 1999 in a hall at Wiener Neustadt-Ost airfield, exactly 90 years after the first hangars were built there. The site is considered one of the cradles of Austrian aviation: aviation pioneers such as Igo Etrich took off here, and female pioneers such as Milli Beese and Lilly Steinschneider learned to fly here.
The exhibition leads from the beginnings of flight to the present day. On display are originals and replicas, such as an Etrich Taube and the Pischof Autoplan, gliders, engines and cockpits, a Messerschmitt Me 109 G-6 reconstructed from original parts, and modern aircraft from Diamond Aircraft. A balloon basket commemorates Josef Starkbaum's altitude world record. The museum is run by the association Verein Flugmuseum Aviaticum, whose members continually expand the collection.
