About the museum
The municipal collection of Wiener Neustadt dates back to 1824: under Mayor Felix Mießl, antiquities from the town hall were inventoried at that time, including the late Gothic Corvinus Cup and a gospel book. From 1825 the pieces were displayed in the town hall, and in 1904 the museum moved to the former Jesuit residence next to the Vorstadtkirche.
After a reorganisation in 1950 by a voluntary curator, a modern extension followed in 1994, for the city's 800th anniversary. The museum's present home is in the complex around St. Peter an der Sperr, the church of the former Dominican nunnery on Johannes-von-Nepomuk-Platz.
For the Lower Austrian State Exhibition 2019, the church and museum building were comprehensively renovated together with the casemates. At the beginning of 2020, the redesigned museum opened with the permanent exhibition “neuSTADT ERZÄHLEN”, which tells the history of the city from around 1200 to the present with art treasures, everyday objects and archaeological finds from Roman and earlier times.
The collection belongs to the city of Wiener Neustadt; it is operated by the municipal WN Kul.Tour.Marketing GmbH, which also offers changing exhibitions, concerts and an extensive education programme for schools and families.
