About the museum

The Reckturm forms the north-western corner of the medieval city fortifications of Wiener Neustadt; its foundations date back to the early 13th century. At first it served for defence, later as an office and prison, in which interrogations also took place.

In the late 19th century demolition of the tower began. The art historian Franz Staub managed to save it around 1901/02 and had it restored in the style of the 15th century. Since 1957 the listed building has housed a small museum.

The present exhibition goes back to the couple Josef and Gertraud Karlik: the idea arose in 1993, and after extensive renovation with new doors and display cases the private museum opened to visitors in 1994. On display are rifles, historic edged and thrust weapons, matchlock weapons and k. u. k. army equipment, along with historical photographs of the city and the tower. The family still looks after the building themselves and guides visitors through the collection.
