About the museum
The Fürstenkasten was built in 1557 as a three-storey masonry granary at the Gasthofgut in Eben im Pongau. The estate was originally the seat of a Urbarpropstei (manorial provostry) of Admont Abbey, later passed to the Archdiocese of Salzburg and served as an administrative and tithe office for the forests in the Fritztal. The granary remained under the administration of the Hofkammer until 1848 and is also called the Fürstenstadl. Coat-of-arms frescoes, a sundial and a view of Radstadt decorate the façade.
A museum on the history of the Tauern road was set up in the building. The municipality of Eben acquired the house in 2009. The exhibition spans Roman Alpine roads, the Migration Period and pack-animal traffic, medieval trade and transport, agricultural utility vehicles and postal traffic over the Radstädter Tauern, up to the history of the Tauern motorway. Added to this are medieval life, illustrated by the Gasthofgut, and the theme "The Road as Fate", with the Peasants' Wars and the lot of Protestants in the Pongau.
The museum is currently closed. According to a press report from April 2026, the roof is increasingly leaking and will soon have to be re-covered to protect the exhibition; when and how things will continue is uncertain.
