About the museum

The Altenmarkt local history museums consist of two buildings in the village centre. The Hoamathaus is the former Bruderhaus, first documented in 1408, which took in the elderly and the sick. It has belonged to the municipality since 1938 and served as a care home until 1970; in that same year it became a museum, founded by Kaspar Fritzenwallner. After a renovation in 1998 it was given the name Hoamathaus, and between 2012 and 2015 the exhibition was completely redesigned.

The second site, the Dechantshoftenne, was added in 1981. The threshing floor belonged to the parish's Dechantshof, which in the early 20th century had large landholdings and a lot of livestock, and today serves as a showroom for large agricultural machinery and tools. In 2019 the Hoamathaus received a commendation for the Salzburger Museumsschlüssel, and in 2021 the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality.

In the Hoamathaus the focus is on the role of women in the home region up to the 1960s: rooms such as the Anichhofstube, smoke kitchen, women's room and schoolroom, as well as topics such as the midwife and barber-surgeon, Perchten, riflemen, traditional costume and the development into a winter sports region ("White Gold"), show work and everyday life. The Dechantshoftenne displays, among other things, a working loom, an old mill, hand tools, timber transport and old firefighting equipment.
