About the museum

The writer Karl Heinrich Waggerl was born in Bad Gastein in 1897 and moved to Wagrain in 1920 as a teacher with his wife Edith. Until his death in 1973 he lived in the so-called Waggerl Haus, which is first mentioned in documents as early as 1776. His literary works, closely tied to the description of his home region, were written here.

A donation from Edith Waggerl, who died in 1990, enabled the market town of Wagrain, together with the cultural association Blaues Fenster and with scholars, to convert the house into a museum. It opened in 1994.

The most important rooms have been left as Waggerl lived in them. Throughout the house, examples of his craftwork as a bookbinder, painter, draughtsman, photographer and collector can be seen. In the side rooms, panels, display cases, three audio stations and a video film provide a critical and informative introduction to the man and his work. The house sees itself at once as a place for engaging with the poet and, because the concept of Heimat (homeland) was central to Waggerl, also as a kind of local history museum. The museum is looked after by the cultural association Blaues Fenster.
