About the museum
In the upper Angertal near Bad Hofgastein, archaeologists uncovered the remains of late medieval smelting furnaces. Between about 1490 and 1530, gold and silver ore was smelted right at the find site, which the region says is unique in Europe.
The association Via Aurea, together with the municipality of Bad Hofgastein, established the mining center here, which opened in August 2008. Three smelting furnaces were restored and supplemented with reconstructed buildings: the miners' house (Knappenhaus), the mine master's house (Bergmeisterhaus) and the forge (Schmiede). A central water wheel drives two bellows for the furnaces and a stamp mill (Pochwerk) for crushing the ore.
The grounds are freely accessible; the buildings can only be visited on a guided tour. From the parking area in the Angertal, it is a walk of about one hour to the site.
