About the museum
Ludwig Wittgenstein was a village schoolteacher in Trattenbach from 1920 to 1922, where he taught some seventy children. His first lodging in the village was the so-called Schachnerstüberl, a house built in 1838 that is now a listed monument. It was there that the municipality set up the Wittgenstein documentation, which was recently redesigned.
The exhibition does not present itself as a collection of memorabilia, although a few objects are on display, above all the bed Wittgenstein designed himself during his time in Cambridge. It uses the history of the village to shed light on the socio-cultural fabric of the early 20th century.
The house is complemented by the Wittgenstein-Weg: along the path the teacher walked to the "Traht-Bäurin" to eat and fetch milk, there are signs with excerpts from the "Tractatus". Every August an international philosophy symposium takes place in the Feistritz Valley.
