About the museum
In Küb, a growing tourist resort on the Semmering Railway, a post office with a telephone exchange and postal savings service was set up in 1905. Counter service was continuous from 5 September 1908, the office was connected to automatic long-distance dialling in 1950, and in 1965 the village received the postcode 2671. It began as a small telephone exchange in the house of the Lechner family, which quickly grew into a full post office.
A careful modernisation in 1987 preserved the look of the turn of the century. The counter wall, which comes from the closed Semmering post office, is a particular source of pride; the telephone booth and customers' desk are also on show. From 1966 the postmistress Anna Tscharnuter left her mark; she became known in Post advertising as the typical "Postdame".
The post office ceased operating for good in 2004. The municipality of Payerbach has run the building as a museum ever since; in season, postcards and stamps are sold at weekends, and the office has its own postmark along with a "Küber Postmarke". In 1994 the building served as a filming location for the TV series "Der Salzbaron".
