About the museum

The castle in the oldest part of Reichenau dates from around 1190 and is thus older than the first documentary mention of the place name. Over the centuries it served as a seat of lordship, as a branch of Neuberg Abbey and as the administrative seat of the Innerberger Hauptgewerkschaft, which mined iron in the valley.

Later the entrepreneurial Waissnix family acquired the complex and used it in a variety of ways. The last owner, Margarethe Bader-Waissnix, placed the castle in a foundation for the benefit of the market town of Reichenau, with the mandate to establish a cultural centre here. Since the Lower Austrian Provincial Exhibition in 2003 the castle has been used for exhibitions and events; a large hall combines historic stone walls with a modern timber-and-glass structure.

The permanent exhibition "Kulturerbe Reichenau" follows the path of the place from prehistoric and early historic mining to a health resort and summer retreat that attracted visitors from Vienna thanks to the Semmering Railway and proximity to the imperial court, up to today's festival town. In the summer months changing special exhibitions in the castle and in the gallery of the neighbouring 11er Haus complement the programme.
