About the museum
Between 1900 and 1916, Gustav Klimt regularly spent his summers at Lake Attersee; more than 40 of his roughly 55 known landscape paintings were inspired by this area. The association Klimt am Attersee, founded in 2011, is dedicated to preserving and communicating this cultural heritage. The Klimt-Zentrum in Schörfling opened in 2012 for the artist's 150th birthday.
In 2024 the house reinvented itself with a new concept. It sees itself not only as a classic museum but also as an information centre, an event venue and a meeting point for art education. A documentation of paintings, photographs, textiles and special loans takes visitors back to the time of the prominent summer guest; the permanent exhibition is at times supplemented by original drawings by Klimt. Each year a new main exhibition complements the programme.
Right in front of the house begin the Klimt Garden and the Klimt themed trail, which leads along the lakeside promenade to stations of Klimt's time at Attersee as far as the Villa Paulick in Seewalchen. The villa, part of the social circle of Klimt's summers, is being made accessible as a branch of the centre.
