About the museum

The Heimathaus Vöcklabruck was founded in 1929; the core of the collection was the estate of the file manufacturer Isidor Braun. Since the house opened in 1937 it has been located in the Benefiziatenhaus next to the parish church, one of the oldest buildings in the town, documented since the 15th century. The museum is run by the Heimathausverein Vöcklabruck.

The ground floor presents rural life, with a farmhouse parlour, a smoke kitchen, a bedroom with brightly painted furniture and agricultural tools. The first floor shows bourgeois living with Baroque furniture, a Renaissance room with a richly carved wooden ceiling and a life-size crucifix from around 1500, and a Biedermeier room. There are also guild and house signs, guild chests and painted Gmunden ceramics. Among the highlights are ten gilded Lombard copper plates from the 8th century, which are among the oldest Christian works of art in Austria.

A memorial room commemorates the composer Anton Bruckner and his first biographer Max Auer, both of whom were connected with Vöcklabruck. On the second floor you can see historical weapons from the late Middle Ages to the First World War, finds from the lake dwellings on the Attersee and Mondsee, Roman mosaics from Weyregg and a replica of a Roman milestone.
