About the museum
The Haus der Kultur on Attergaustraße was originally the elementary school of St. Georgen, with four classrooms and ancillary rooms. After the school moved into a new school center, the building was renovated, modernized, fitted with an elevator and put to cultural use. The official opening took place at the end of June 2002. Today it houses various cultural institutions of the Attergau and the exhibitions of the Heimatverein Attergau, which was founded in 1994 to research, document and preserve the region's cultural heritage.
The oldest permanent exhibition is devoted to the Baroque poet and composer Johann Beer (1655–1700), born in St. Georgen, and was set up in 2000 for the 300th anniversary of his death. A second exhibition honors the teacher, naturalist and painter Erich Wilhelm Ricek (1915–1991), who focused on the plant life of the Attergau and created lifelike miniature paintings.
A third exhibition displays restored finds from the archaeology of the Attergau: grave goods from three Iron Age graves on the Dienstberg and in the Baumer Holz, as well as finds and a model of the Roman estate (Gutshof) of Königswiesen.
