About the museum
When the new parish center in St. Georgen im Attergau was dedicated, the old parsonage, the so-called Kaplanhaus (chaplain's house), became vacant. Since autumn 1995 it has served as the parish museum; its rooms also hold large parts of the extensive parish archive. The museum is looked after by the Heimatverein Attergau.
The focus is on the treasures of the parish, an extensive collection on folk piety, the guilds of St. Georgen and historical light sources. Highlights include indulgence letters, among them the oldest in Upper Austria, dating from 1299, religious books, old prints, and liturgical vestments and vessels. A Roman tombstone recalls antiquity in the Attergau.
Folk piety is expressed in pilgrimage souvenirs, rosaries, crosses, wax objects and convent handiwork; the guild collection tells of millers, linen weavers and other craftsmen of the village.
