About the museum
The museum is housed in the Amonhaus, a manor house from the mid-16th century that once belonged to the Hammerherren – the wealthy iron merchants and hammer mill owners of the Ybbs valley. It was founded by the teacher Heinrich Paris, who came to Lunz in 1884, began collecting objects from the region and officially opened the collection as a museum in 1914.
After his death in 1940, the municipality eventually took over its operation. In 2013 the building was comprehensively renovated and the exhibition redesigned.
On the guided tour through six rooms, visitors get to know the world of the “Black Counts”: exhibits, clothing, pictures and documents show the everyday life of the Hammerherren, but also that of farmers, charcoal burners and woodcutters. Also on view are the Hammerherren room, an original surviving smoke kitchen from the 16th century and a room that vividly illustrates the former iron processing. The museum is part of the Eisenstraße Niederösterreich (Lower Austrian Iron Route).
