About the museum
The museum in the town hall of Scheibbs was founded in 1991 as a joint project of the municipality and the shooting guild, which has existed in the town since the 16th century. It preserves an extensive series of painted wooden targets that were made at shooting festivals as prizes, dedications and keepsakes.
Scheibbs long belonged to the Gaming Charterhouse. Its prior opened the shooting season and donated prizes, which is why around one hundred targets bear the Carthusian coat of arms or monastic motifs. The pictures record political events, incidents from the town, domestic scenes and anniversaries, and are often provided with Latin inscriptions. The historic series comprises pieces from the late 17th century to 1941; in addition there are more recent targets with humorous everyday motifs.
The tour on the upper floor begins with a wooden bird, as once used in bird shooting, and leads along the targets, each of which is briefly explained. In this way, target shooting becomes vivid as a sociable leisure pursuit of the middle classes on the threshold of the modern era.
