About the museum

The building on the market square of Ybbsitz was once the administrative building of the landlord, Seitenstetten Abbey. Later known as the Kremayr-Haus, it initially showed mainly the history of the market town. After restoration and redesign, it reopened in 2006 as the metal and experience centre "FeRRUM – welt des eisens"; in 2026 the museum celebrates its 20th anniversary.

In nine interactive themed islands, the permanent exhibition leads from the beginnings of ironworking to the present and future, showing how much metal shapes everyday life. It is complemented by products of Ybbsitz iron processing such as artistic wrought-iron work and a lock collection, as well as parts of the Kremayr collection of bourgeois material culture, furniture and folk art.

The building also houses the tourist office, the shopFeRRUM and a tasting bar. Since 2011 the museum has held the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality and is the starting point of the roughly 3-kilometre Schmiedemeile along the Prollingbach.
