About the museum
Duke Albrecht II of Austria founded the Carthusian monastery to fulfill a vow he had made with his brother Leopold before the Battle of Mühldorf in 1322. He himself laid the cornerstone in 1332, and the monastery church was consecrated in 1342. The 'Marian Throne' monastery was designed from the outset for twice as many monks as was customary and was settled with monks from Mauerbach. Albrecht II, his wife Johanna of Pfirt, and his daughter-in-law Elisabeth of Bohemia are buried in the church.
During the Baroque period, the complex acquired a library with ceiling frescoes by Wenzel Lorenz Reiner (1723) and an ornate prelate's hall. In 1782, Joseph II dissolved the Carthusian monastery; the Gothic cloister was demolished and most of the approximately 20,000 books were lost.
From 1984 onward, the nearly ruined complex was rescued through decades of work: roofs, church, frescoes, and arcades were restored, and guest rooms, a hotel, and dining rooms were created. Since 2014, the monastery has belonged to a private foundation. In 2004, museum rooms were established in the newly glazed wooden cloister, providing information about the history of the monastery and the Carthusians. During the summer season, regular guided tours lead through the courtyards and main rooms.
