About the museum

The Stehrerhof open-air museum in Oberhaid near Neukirchen an der Vöckla grew up around a Hausruck farmhouse about 400 years old. Since its opening in 1978, the farm, with its largely original furnishings, including the Hoarstube (parlour), Troadkasten (granary), Dörrhäusl (drying house) and Göpelhütte (horse-gin shed), has given an impression of everyday farm life in the 19th century. The museum is run by the association Heimatbund Freilichtmuseum Stehrerhof.

The first extension followed in 1985, a large octagonal hall away from the farm. It houses the Austrian Threshing Machine Museum, which shows the technical development from the hand-driven peg thresher to the combine harvester, complemented by a harvesting equipment display from the Austrian federal states. Every September the steam engine and threshing machines are put into operation during the Druschwochen (threshing weeks).

In 1993 a neighbouring Mittertennhof (central-threshing-floor farmhouse) from the 16th century, the former “Davidn-Haus”, was opened as the craftsmen's house. Around 70 crafts and activities are presented there, many of them in working order; they are demonstrated on craft days. The weaver's room illustrates the path from flax to linen. At the entrance of the museum, a herb garden with medicinal and culinary herbs and perennials from farm gardens, newly laid out in 2017, completes the offer.
