About the museum
The Heimatmuseum (local history museum) of Schwanenstadt has been housed in the Pausinger Villa on Linzer Straße since 2007. The building was designed in 1860 by a Scandinavian architect who was also involved in railway construction at the time, which is why the villa recalls the railway stations of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The extensive grounds lie on a historically important burial site and are known as an excavation site; excavations in the garden uncovered a Bajuwarian (early Bavarian) burial ground and Roman finds.
The exhibition in the various rooms is divided into four thematic areas: from the Ice Age to the Iron Age, the Roman period and the Bajuwarians, the town's history, and guilds and crafts. Special pieces include the hand-forged wrought-iron town cash box, about 500 years old, with a sophisticated locking mechanism in the lid, and the original market sign: as long as its sword was hung out visibly, outsiders were not allowed to shop at the market. There are also agricultural tools, guild signs, banners and an exhibition on the local fire brigade.
The Heimathausverein (local heritage association) continuously collects exhibits from estates and donations and expands the display accordingly. The curator offers personal tours, during which background stories and anecdotes about the town are shared.
