About the museum

The Sigl.Haus is considered the last timber farmhouse in the typical Flachgau style. The original farm in Eching is documented since the 17th century and was destroyed in 1835 by a fire that broke out during Corpus Christi celebrations through careless firing of ceremonial mortars. The timber house built afterwards was dismantled in the early 1980s and rebuilt on the parish grounds of St. Georgen.

The museum was founded by the St. Georgen cultural promotion association in 1983; the official opening took place on 26 October 1983. The first exhibits included farm implements, a shoemaker's workshop and a loom. Since 2015, under new management, the house has combined traditional culture with contemporary art and shows changing exhibitions.

The collection documents everyday life in St. Georgen and the surrounding area: farms and agriculture, a complete shoemaker's workshop of the Spitzauer family spanning three generations, and flax processing and linen production. The oldest piece is the skeleton of an early medieval woman ("Bajuwarin", 7th century) from Untereching in a reconstructed grave. In 2017/18 the estate of the painter and poet Georg Rendl (1903 to 1972) was added.
