About the museum

The Hellbauerhaus is a log house about 300 years old that was dismantled in Mittergöming and rebuilt in 2011 in the centre of Göming. All of the old timber parts were reused, and an extension in timber-frame construction was added. The house is owned by the municipality of Göming. Besides the museum, it also houses a village inn.

The museum is run by the Kultur- und Geschichtsverein Göming, which was founded in October 2011 with the aim of setting up a museum in the Hellbauerhaus. On 16 April 2016 the first wedding museum in the state of Salzburg opened on the upper floor and in the attic. Members of the society had collected and catalogued around 800 objects for it, including wedding dresses more than 100 years old.

The permanent exhibition “Verliebt – Verlobt – Verheiratet” (In Love – Engaged – Married) leads through the search for a partner, the wedding celebration, the wedding night and married life, and shows how customs have changed over the centuries. In addition there are items from farm life around 1900, a children's discovery workshop with old toys in the attic, and an exhibition on geology and archaeology created together with RAG. The house is also Station 11 on the Stille-Nacht-Friedensweg (Silent Night Peace Trail).
