About the museum

The Sixenhof on the north shore of Lake Achensee is a typical single-roof farmhouse of the region: living quarters and farm section lie under one roof, the ground floor is masonry, and the upper floor and attic are built as a timber log structure. The farming family "beim Sixen" ran a sizeable estate here with around 25 cattle, horses, pigs, sheep and chickens, plus fields, forest and an alpine pasture.

Since 1964 the house has belonged to the municipality of Achenkirch. In 1984 the Achental Heimatmuseum support association was founded and immediately began the renovation; in September 1987 the museum was officially opened. The association still does not regard its task as complete and continues to expand the collection.

On three floors and in 21 rooms, numerous exhibits document the life of the ancestors in the Achental. They cover crafts, hunting and fishing, firefighting, Lake Achensee shipping and above all the timber industry, which has always played a central role in this heavily forested area. In Advent the centuries-old stable becomes the stage for the "Tiroler Bergweihnacht" with live animals, a narration and projections.
