About the museum
Heinrich Harrer was born in 1912 in Knappenberg, which today belongs to the municipality of Hüttenberg. The mountaineer, sportsman, geographer and explorer became famous for numerous first ascents, expeditions and above all for his years in Tibet, which he described in the book "Seven Years in Tibet". In Lhasa he became teacher and confidant of the young 14th Dalai Lama and remained a lifelong friend.
The museum in his home town goes back to 1983 and is housed in the former primary school of Hüttenberg, a listed two-winged building from the 1870s. It is run by the market town of Hüttenberg together with the town's other museums.
On around 1,000 square metres, more than 5,000 exhibits tell of Harrer's life and his journeys to Tibet, Africa, Borneo, Suriname, the Rio Xingu and the Andaman Islands. The Tibet section includes a Buddhist prayer room, which the Dalai Lama personally consecrated in 1992. On the rock face opposite runs the Lingkor, a Tibetan pilgrim path with symbols of Tibetan Buddhism, which the Dalai Lama also consecrated in 2002.
