About the museum

After ore mining in Hüttenberg ceased in 1978, the show mine opened in Knappenberg in 1980. It uses an old drainage adit (Erbstollen) from 1567 that is around 900 metres long. The market municipality of Hüttenberg operates the site together with other museums in the town.

On the underground tour, visitors learn about mining methods, machinery, mining technology, ventilation and the hauling of ore through shafts and galleries; there are also stories and legends about the miners and St Barbara as patron saint of miners. The mining museum shows finds, historic tools, a large collection of miners' lamps, documents on miners' customs, and the Hüttenberg mining code of Maria Theresa.

The mineral exhibition presents more than 200 mineral species; Hüttenberg is considered one of the most important mineral localities in the world. Those who want to search for themselves can dig for minerals on the Albert spoil heap. Since 2010 the doll museum has also stood opposite, where the artist Helga Riedel portrays the life and customs of the people of Hüttenberg with dolls.
